My childhood dream has finally come true. I was recently awarded PhD in Auditory Neuroscience by Newcastle University, UK. My thesis is titled "A primate model of human cortical analysis of auditory objects". Here is a short summary of my work:

Bhagawat Gita Typing Game

'Bhagawat Gita' (also 'Bhagavad Gita') is the holy sacred book of the Hindus. The verses or shlokas are written in Sanskrit language which is the oldest classical language from India. However, this language is not popular among common folks. So learning the sacred verses is quite hard. Yet, this holy scripture has something to offer to us in the 21st century. It is considered an influential management book by many leaders. So I was wondering on how to make it interesting for younger generation to engage in learning of this holy book. Then I hit upon an idea to gamify learning of these verses. How about a game of typing but the text are the English transliterated Sanskrit verses from the Gita. I developed "Bhagavad Gita Typing Game" as a web app to enable wide reach across device types (desktop, mobile, tablet) yet be OS agnostic. Tree identification

I attended a few sessions on Tree Identification during different seasons organised by Natural History Society of Northumbria ( NHSN ). These were guided walks lasting a couple of hours led by tree experts. These were amazing sessions where the enthusiasm of the guides were matched by us inquisitive participants. Adhika masa and Kshaya masa

This article is regarding the concept of Adhikamasa and Kshayamasa (intercalary months) used in some luni-solar calendars in India. Luni-solar calendars are in vogue since lunar months determine the high and low tides while the solar year determines the seasons. But the use of luni-solar calendars create a unique problem. Since the lunar year (12 lunar months) lags behind the solar year (~365.25 days), this creates a need to keep the lunar year and the solar year in synchrony. Hence the need to use Adhika masa (extra month) and Kshaya masa (removed month)! The reason for their asynchrony is explained next.

Movie review - 'Stanley ka Dabba'

I recently watched the movie 'Stanley ka Dabba' (SKD) and here is my review of the movie. In short, SKD is a finely made film highlighting an important social issue and the movie succeeds in doing just that and it does smartly as well. This aspect is very important in a country like ours where pertinent issues like corruption, policy reforms are high jacked in a jiffy by things like IPL or 'Shiela ki jawani' song.

I had come across this forward message that made tall claims for hanuman chalisa. The forward read as follows: Any one knows the Hanuman chalisa? In Hanuman Chalisa, it is said : "Yug sahastra yojan per Bhanu! Leelyo taahi madhur phal janu!!" 1 Yug = 12000 years 1 Sahastra = 1000 1 Yojan = 8 Miles Yug x Sahastra x Yojan = par Bhanu 12000 x 1000 x 8 miles = 96000000 miles 1 mile = 1.6km 96000000 miles = 96000000 x 1.6km = 1536000000 km to Sun NASA has said that, it is the exact distance between Earth and Sun (Bhanu). Which proves Hanuman ji did jump to Planet Sun, thinking it as a sweet fruit (Madhu phal). It is really interesting how accurate and meaningful our ancient scriptures are..Unfortunately it is barely recognized. In this article, I wish to discuss and demystify few important myths surrounding the anti-corruption movement led by Anna Hazare backed by India Against Corruption . Myth : Objective of the movement is to bypass the parliament and enact jan lokpal bill and hence anti-parliamentary in nature. This is the single biggest misconception that many people on both sides have. The movement was to ensure that the strong effective Lokpal bill is tabled in the parliament at the earliest and enacted.

Bangalore MLC Graduates voter registration starts from Oct 1 – Nov 5, 2011 (Last Date). Election and actual voting will happen in the 2012. Who is eligible to vote? If you are resident of Bangalore AND you are a graduate from any Indian university (passed out before Nov 1st, 2008), you can register as a voter and cast a vote to send a graduate to the Legislative Council. You will need a copy of your graduation certificate, self-attested if you are submitting it in person, or attested by a Gazetted officer if you are posting it. "You don't really understand something well enough if you cannot explain it cogently to your grandmother!" - Unknown For a scientist or a researcher, the ability to summarize a work to a target audience effectively and succinctly is an important and useful skill. However there are different media (text, video, image) for conveying the research, each medium with different word limits (100 to 100 thousand words) and targeted towards a different audience (general public to experts). Bee hive removal is not pest control

In Bangalore people are increasingly engaging pest control folks for removal of bee hive.
