Tree-ID game

I developed a hang man style game as a web app. The challenge is to identify the tree by clues in the form of pictures of its bark, bud and leaf. Upon each unsuccessful guess of a letter, a new clue is revealed as pictures with the final clue being the Latin name. When the player correctly identifies the tree, they will see the time taken by them. One can learn more about natural history. This is supported on both desktop and handheld devices.  Try the Tree-ID game here -  https://pd2.github.io/tree-id/

Tree identification

I attended a few sessions on Tree Identification during different seasons organised by Natural History Society of Northumbria ( NHSN ). These were guided walks lasting a couple of hours led by tree experts. These were amazing sessions where the enthusiasm of the guides were matched by us inquisitive participants. We covered basic aspects of tree identification, their ecological niche, interconnections in the ecosystem, utility to humans over time. Here are the visual guides to tree identification for summer and

2036: Holocaust of wild animals

Image
Scientific studies have predicted that by the year 2036 the wild vertebrates (mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles) will go extinct. What would remain are those wild animals that are in the zoo. Could you guess the reason for this problem and a possible solution?  A recent peer reviewed publication [1] reported that the total biomass of

Please consider to donate.

Spend your next vacation close to nature, away from the hustle and bustle of the urban space. The moment we think of spending a day in a verdant valley, we are reminded of exorbitant expenses charged by those fancy resorts and retreats. No you do not need to shell out a fortune for this. Just make a trip to the

Bee hive removal is not pest control

Image
In Bangalore people are increasingly engaging pest control folks for removal of bee hive. But they go about performing hive removal in a non-traditional way with the use of heavy chemicals which on one hand kill the bees instantly (rendering the honey useless!) but also affect people, children and the surroundings. And they end up paying them to do this! We need to stop this practise immediately. Instead, I wish to bring to your notice SOS Wildlife Rescue Centre,

Tweet for the sparrow

Image
Ever wondered where have those little sparrows that warble outside your home gone? The once ubiquitous House Sparrows (Passer Domesticus) are now rarely seen in the cities. However, they are still a part of the pleasant rustic residence. I was lucky to spot a bunch of them but in a hill station (not in the city). Here are couple of my pics..
