The first International Space Apps Challenge took place in 2012 and included 2,000 participants in 25 cities from 17 countries and resulted in 101 solutions. The second event took place in 2013 and included 9,000 participants in 83 cities from 44 countries and resulted in 770 solutions.

“This global collaboration provides a unique opportunity to participate in space exploration, design innovative solutions, and advance technology development," said Deborah Diaz, NASA's deputy chief information officer. "The previous events have sparked some incredible innovations beyond what the event organizers could have ever hoped for and we have are excited about the potential in 2014."

The International Space Apps Challenge demonstrates NASA's commitment to the principles of open innovation through the application of open data and technology. The event seeks to develop solutions to compelling problems of global concern, encourages citizens in countries with little or no investments in space exploration to contribute to the cause, promotes science, technology, engineering and mathematics education, and encourages international partnership and mutual understanding.
