Movie Review - Lucia

It has been quite a while since we spoke movies. Now here I am giving my recommendation. Lucia - a movie made in the south Indian language of Kannada is a must watch.

It is hard to find good movies, which in an effort to appeal to the masses talks down to its audience. One can understand the thought process behind making a movie that addresses the lowest common denominator ($£€.Rs). As a breath of fresh air to the Kannada film industry we have director Mr. Pawan Kumar tackle an interesting topic.

Human fascination with interpreting dreams and its significance seems to be a never ending endeavour. While inception was about secrets in dream, Lucia is about
how dreams fill the void in the life of protagonist. One might expect nothing less from a dream but what if the dreams become the reality for the protagonist!

The entire story is from protagonist's "point of view" and contemplate his dilemma. How does he then identify which is "the reality"? How does he reconcile his "perceived reality" with the actual one?

Lucia has a great story which is furthered by the thoughtful director employing an innovative tool in its screenplay - Black & White versus Colour to differentiate the two worlds). What happens when these two worlds collide? An interesting premise isn't it?

Do not get me wrong. The movie is not without its faults. But they are not big enough to interrupt us in enjoying the movie in a way that compels us to stop the film or change the channel. For an first attempt at an experimental genre it is a nicely made movie.

The makers of Lucia do not just push the envelope in the technical and creative aspects, they go on to innovate it is financial aspect by raising funds directly from the audience - a first for a south Indian movie. Further they go on to build a online distribution model which is essential to reach the sparsely distributed niche audience who vie to watch such movies.

It is then no doubt to hear that Lucia contended for the India's official entry to the Oscars in 2014. Way to go Team Lucia. All the very best, I will watch out for your future releases, Mr Pawan.
