Data centres and Renewable energy
Today is observed as Earth Day. So let us discuss some of the ways that each of us are indirectly contributing to global carbon emissions.
Everyone is online all the time these days. Be it for work or leisure. Be it on a desktop or on a mobile phone. Nothing gets done without the internet. So this raises an important question on whether the Big Tech companies run their services on clean energy?
Here are some of the efforts on investing in renewable energy for running the data centres. Many internet Tech giant companies either run or plan to run their data centres using renewable energy entirely.
Google might not fund planting of trees directly but 100% of Google's global operations run on renewable energy since 2017. Further, Google claims their data centre uses 50% less energy than a typical one.
Microsoft plans to achieve the goal of running their data centres entirely on renewable energy by 2025.
Meta or more widely known as Facebook has attained net zero emissions by running their global operations on renewable energy.
Amazon plans to reach net zero carbon by 2040 and power global operations using renewable energy by 2025.
Apple hopes that by 2030 every Apple device sold will have net zero climate impact.
Netflix plans to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by the end of 2022,
We as individuals should create a dialogue on social media with our favourite internet Tech companies to invest in renewable energy. This will go a long way in minimizing their carbon footprint of our online presence.
