Visit your National park

Spend your next vacation close to nature, away from the hustle and bustle of the urban space. The moment we think of spending a day in a verdant valley, we are reminded of exorbitant expenses charged by those fancy resorts and retreats. No you do not need to shell out a fortune for this. Just make a trip to the

Movie Review - Lucia

Image
It has been quite a while since we spoke movies. Now here I am giving my recommendation. Lucia - a movie made in the south Indian language of Kannada is a must watch. It is hard to find good movies, which in an effort to appeal to the masses talks down to its audience. One can understand the thought process behind making a movie that addresses the lowest common denominator ($£€.Rs). As a breath of fresh air to the Kannada film industry we have director Mr. Pawan Kumar tackle an interesting topic. Human fascination with interpreting dreams and its significance seems to be a never ending endeavour. While inception was about secrets in dream, Lucia is about

Mathematical Model of Courtship versus Survival

Image
Introduction In natural world, organisms strive to survive long enough to be able to pass on their genes to the next generation. Thus biologically speaking, every individual has two primary tasks - survival and procreation. Since natural selection would work against those individuals who do not strategize in such a manner, so it is pertinent for us to discuss only those who do. But often individuals are in dilemma when faced with having to choose between gathering food and nesting over searching and impressing potential mates. Put differently, what strategy is best suited for resource or time allocation between the tasks of foraging versus courting? To identify the optimal approach in tackling this dilemma is the motivation behind this article...

Loudness on Music System

Image
Ever noticed that "loudness" button on your music system, home theatre, on car audio system. Do you know what it does? What is it meant for? This option is quite misunderstood amongst the users. Here is some information that I hope would help to clear things. Loudness is the correction required during playback of an audio source...

Astronomical Unit in Hanuman Chalisa

Image
I had come across this forward message that made tall claims for hanuman chalisa. The forward read as follows: Any one knows the Hanuman chalisa? In Hanuman Chalisa, it is said : "Yug sahastra yojan per Bhanu! Leelyo taahi madhur phal janu!!"   1 Yug = 12000 years 1 Sahastra = 1000 1 Yojan = 8 Miles Yug x Sahastra x Yojan = par Bhanu 12000 x 1000 x 8 miles = 96000000 miles 1 mile = 1.6km 96000000 miles = 96000000 x 1.6km = 1536000000 km to Sun NASA has said that, it is the exact distance between Earth and Sun (Bhanu). Which proves Hanuman ji did jump to Planet Sun, thinking it as a sweet fruit (Madhu phal). It is really interesting how accurate and meaningful our ancient scriptures are..Unfortunately it is barely recognized. The estimate of 1 astronomical unit (au) - the distance between earth and sun has a long history. The first estimate only came during the transit of Venus in the 18th century. Before this event, we did not have any estimate for the ...

Computer crash or: How I learned to stop worrying and back up my data

Image
I recently faced a computer crash and lost all the data in my computer. We have so much data like photos, videos, documents, tax forms, that we don't even recollect what we lost until we actually do. I ruled out the option of external Hard Drive Drive. I heard from a my friend of mine that his external HDD crashed and he lost data as well. So I am ruling it out. What good is a backup if it is not a reliable? So the only viable and reliable alternative is that I should use

Wonderland

Image
At the boundaries of sense and propriety there is a shore.. which the busy minds and the rigid hearts fail to perceive, where no words in any language can capture my emotions! Amidst that silence - that purity of expression - I shall wait for you.. Till then I will build our castles in the sands of time.

Monotonic functional mapping

I have n functions f_i(x){i=1,...,n} which do not preserve the monotonic mapping order i.e. if x_1 < x_2, then in general, f_i(x_1) is not less than f_i(x_2) (for all i = 1,2,...n). So can I construct a function g mapping on fi's such that g(f1,f2,...fn) is monotonic? If yes, please elaborate on the method for the same. Even if g is a unimodal function, it should be fine. Put differently, for every value of x over an interval, I have the (n) outcomes of some physical process denoted by f_i (i = 1,2, ..., n). Now given such a set of f_i's corresponding to an unknown value of x (but known to lie within an interval), I have the task of estimating x. Since these f_i's are not monotonic in nature (no set pattern), I felt it would aid in this estimation task of mine if I could construct a monotonic function g using the f_i's. Please do convey your ideas.

Carpooling by google?

Image
I think one area where Google Plus can contribute is car pooling. Need less to say car pooling saves money, natural non-renewable resource, pollution, driving stress, traffic jams, parking problems and of course provides an opportunity to make new friends.

Ship of Theseus - Movie Review

Image
'Ship of Theseus' (SOT) is an awesome movie that too coming from an unexpected place, the Indian film industry known for its 'run of the mill' inane and insipid movies. SOT is a movie about three different stories united by a single narrative. Each story exploring different aspects of human existence and karma. SOT starts by posing to the audience the titular thought experiment "Theseus' ship paradox". This is to do with the question of identity

Visual Search Problem

Visual perception accomplished in our brains is a fascinating process. There are many interesting features that one comes across. One of them is the visual search problem - the objective is to identify an odd image amidst a group of distractor images in the shortest time. Put differently, certain kind of symbols are more easily recognizable when placed amidst a group of similar looking symbols whilst others are not. For instance - symbol 'V' amidst symbol '^'s (inverted V) are very easy to spot. On the other hand, symbol 'S's are much more difficult to spot amidst symbol '2' (mirrored S). I could personally relate to this phenomenon while solving a 3x3 Sudoku in the shortest possible time.

Education and development of a nation

Image
Education can have a tremendous effect on the economic development of a country. Here is my plan to encourage students to pursue a higher education degree.  "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." - Nelson Mandela In evolving a plan to encourage students to pursue a higher education degree, I propose a multi-pronged approach with government, educational institutes and industry acting as key partners in this 'agenda for change'.

International Spaceapps Challenge 2014

Image
The third annual International Space Apps Challenge will be held on the weekend of April 12-13, 2014. NASA has started accepting registrations to participate. NASA and other space agencies around the world are preparing for next edition of International Space Apps Challenge. The International Space Apps Challenge is an international mass collaboration that takes place in cities around the world. The event embraces collaborative problem solving with a goal of producing relevant open-source solutions to advance space exploration missions and improve life on Earth. NASA is leading this global collaboration along with a number of additional government collaborators and local partner organizations. If you are interested, you could participate either at
